The creators of “Game of Thrones,” David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, are currently promoting their latest series – “The Three-Body Problem,” which will debut on Netflix next month. In one of their recent interviews, they discussed what prompted their departure from HBO.
“Game of Thrones” for smartphones?!
Can you imagine “Game of Thrones” adapted for smartphones? Vertical photo format and short episodes that can be watched like an Instagram reel? It turns out that was the vision of Warner Media’s owners – which didn’t sit well with the creators of the series. They talked about it in an interview with “Wall Street Journal Magazine.”
“When you sign a five-year contract, you want the company’s situation to be stable so that you can calmly do your work without worrying that your company will be taken over by a telecommunications company,” Benioff said.
He was referring to AT&T, which owns Warner Media, and thus HBO. According to Benioff and Weiss, they were pressured by AT&T to shoot in vertical format. This was supposed to make it easier to watch the series on smartphones (as if there wasn’t an option to rotate the screen). For the same reason, AT&T also demanded mini-episodes “for quick consumption.”
Benioff and Weiss also confirmed a long-standing rumor that the finale of “Game of Thrones” was supposed to be presented in three movies rather than thirteen episodes divided into two seasons.
