Evel Knievel (1938–2007) was an American stuntman and daredevil, known for performing high-risk motorcycle stunts. His performances thrilled audiences but often resulted in serious injuries. However, Chazelle’s film won’t be a traditional biopic. Instead, it will focus solely on the year 1974, when Knievel attempted to jump over the Snake River in Idaho on his motorcycle.

The original screenplay was written by William Monahan, who won an Oscar for his script for The Departed, which starred DiCaprio. Later, Terence Winter, the screenwriter of The Wolf of Wall Street—also featuring DiCaprio—revised the script.

Knievel earned a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for suffering the most bone fractures in a lifetime—an astonishing 433. He was also infamous for his explosive temper, which ultimately ended his career. When a book was written about him, he was so unhappy with it that he took matters into his own hands—literally—by attacking the author (who was also his manager) with a baseball bat. Saltman was left fighting for his life and had to undergo multiple surgeries. Knievel was sentenced to six months in prison. As a result, he lost his sponsorships and was ultimately forced to declare bankruptcy.
