“Absolute Garbage”: TV Star Tears Apart Action Hit with Tom Cruise

“For many movie fans, ‘Top Gun Maverick’ is considered one of the best blockbusters of recent years. However, a Hollywood star recently expressed very negative opinions about the film using harsh language.

Last year, director Joseph Kosinski and lead actor Tom Cruise treated us to ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ one of the most bombastic action films in recent memory. With an incredible box office performance, raking in $1.495 billion in the United States, the sequel proved to be a massive success at the theaters.

Critically and with audiences, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ was a sensation. Rotten Tomatoes gave the fast-paced film a 96% approval rating among critics, and viewers were even more enthusiastic with a 99% rating. On Metacritic, the sequel scored an impressive 78 out of 100, while the audience’s average rating was 7.4 out of 10.

One notable viewer, however, turns out to be a true hater of ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’ Robert Iler, best known for his role as Anthony Soprano Jr. (AJ) in the series ‘The Sopranos,’ is more than just disappointed with the film. During an appearance on the ‘Not Today, Pal’ podcast, he likened the action hit to a McDonald’s meal and claimed that ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ had ruined the film industry.

You can find Robert Iler’s complete statement below. But first, let’s introduce a few action franchises.

Why Robert Iler Hates ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ In his critique, Robert Iler asserts that ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is just a short-term sensation and that in a few years, nobody will really remember the film. The 38-year-old actor said:

“I believe ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ has ruined the entire film industry. I think it’s ruined everything! It will save [the film industry] for four or five years because people will think, ‘Oh, this is it!’ It’s like eating a damn McDonald’s menu or garbage. And then suddenly, in four years, people will turn around and say, ‘Why do I feel bad?’ Because you’re watching damn garbage movies! Just like a damn McDonald’s menu where you feel good for 15 minutes, and then suddenly you say, ‘Oh, wait a minute…'”

Robert Iler went on to say:

“[I’m upset that] people told me it’s a good movie, that it was nominated for an Oscar, and then I watched it with the expectation of an Oscar-worthy film […] Is there anything where you say, ‘Oh wow, I didn’t see that coming. That was interesting.’ Was there anything interesting about the whole film? That’s my point, in five years, people will say, ‘Oh my God, we said this should be the greatest film of all time because we were coming out of the COVID pandemic.’ […] It’s fine [if the film makes you happy], but then to say Oscar, best film, to put it in a category like [‘The Godfather’]? A disgrace! It ruined the entire film industry. That’s it. I don’t want to watch movies anymore. ‘Top Gun’ made me hate movies. Junk. Absolute garbage.”
