Because of “Top Gun: Maverick”: Journalist eats shoe in front of the camera

For a long time no one believed in a sequel to the blockbuster “Top Gun” – including Matt Patches. A corresponding tweet was now spectacularly fatal to the American journalist. The internet never forgets…

It’s like that with proverbs: If you take the author at his or her word, it can end badly for him or her. One who can sing a song about it is Matt Patches. In 2010, the then deputy head of the entertainment department of the website “Polygon” got carried away with a prediction about a possible “Top Gun” sequel: “If ‘Top Gun 2’ comes out, I’ll eat a shoe,” Patches tweeted in rhetorical recourse to the English version of the saying “I’ll eat a broom”.

As you know, things turned out differently. With “Top Gun: Maverick”, the sequel to the 80s cult film recently hit the cinemas. So it was now time to fulfill the twelve-year-old promise. The journalist captured the result in a 20-minute YouTube video.

Walk with fruit leather shoe

The production company Paramount Pictures offered him an easy way out and sent him a cake in the shape of a shoe for the theatrical release, Patches explained. But that seemed too easy to him. Instead, he began researching how he could make an actual shoe and eat it without seriously endangering his health. Inspired by Charlie Chaplin, he opted for a shoe made of fruit leather. This is fruit puree dried in the oven. He made a shoe out of this fruit leather and some rubber snakes, which he then wore for a short walk on the street and in the neighboring front yard. He then ate the shoe in front of the camera.

Outstanding start for “Top Gun: Maverick”

“Top Gun: Maverick” is meanwhile developing into the big box office hit of the year: According to the industry service “Deadline”, the film grossed 248 million US dollars in around 62 cinema markets on the opening weekend, of which 124 million dollars are attributable to the USA alone. For leading actor Tom Cruise, this is the best theatrical release of his career. For the production company Paramount Pictures it is the second best after “Transformers: The Revenge of the Fallen”. The first “Top Gun” film from 1986 grossed almost 357 million dollars at the time with comparatively low production costs of 15 million dollars.
