There is already a fifth candidate for the Oscar in the Best International Film category. This candidate is “Temas propios,” representing Uruguay.

Directed by Guillermo Rocamora, this film is a family comedy set to release in Uruguayan cinemas next week. Notably, “Temas propios” is the sole contender from Uruguay vying for the Oscar nomination. Another film, “Amores pendientes,” has been submitted for the Goya Award in the category of best Spanish-language foreign film.

“Temas propios” tells the story of César, a 45-year-old who still behaves like a teenager. When he faces a separation, he decides to form a music band with his 18-year-old son, Manuel. Unfortunately, generational differences hinder the success of the team…

Uruguay holds the distinction of being the only country in Oscars history whose nominee was both nominated and subsequently disqualified. This relates to the film “A Piece of the World of Your Own.” The Academy disqualified it, citing minimal participation of Uruguayan artists in its production. (“A Piece of the World of Your Own” is primarily an Argentinian production, but Uruguay chose “El lado oscuro del corazón” as its Oscar contender.)

Oscars 2024: List of Titles Competing for Nomination in the Best International Film Category

The Best International Film category at the Oscars welcomes films released for regular distribution in their respective countries between December 1, 2022, and October 31, 2023. Submissions are accepted until October 2, with nominations scheduled for announcement on January 23, 2024.
