In a new trailer, the South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook shows off his new thriller “Decision to Leave”.
Master director Park Chan-wook, behind films such as “Oldboy” and “Stoker”, is back again with a new film after “The Handmaiden” from 2016.
In “Decision to Leave” we get to follow the detective Hae-jun, played by Park Hae-il (from “The Host” and Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Hos’ murder thriller “Memories of Murder”), who investigates the circumstances of a fallen man from a mountain to death. Everything does not seem to be completely normal with the man’s widow, and during the course of the film the detective falls in love with her.
In the role of the widow, we see Tang Wei, from “Lust, Caution” and the Chris Hemsworth film “Blackhat”.
Park Chan-wook, along with “Parasite” director Bong Jong Ho, are perhaps the most influential directors active in South Korea today. Previously, Chan-wook has, among other things, done the “Vengeance” trilogy, which consists of “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance ”,“ Lady Vengeance ”and critically acclaimed“ Oldboy ”. In addition to his career in South Korea, Chan-wook has also been active in the United States with the film “Stoker”, and the TV series “The Little Drummer Girl” on behalf of the BBC.
The South Korean film genius Chan-wook, who has already been awarded “Oldboy” at Cannes, will also perform “Decision to Leave” at the prestigious festival. In April, it was reported that the film will compete for the Palme d’Or, against, among others, David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future”, and the Swedish film “Boy from Heaven”, directed by Tarik Saleh who previously made “The Nile Hilton Incident”.
The premise of “Decision to Leave”, that a man dies after a fall, and that the detective who investigates the death later falls in love with the widow – may not sound so exciting on paper, but if someone can create a film after that idea, there is no other than Park Chan-wook.
