Not much longer, to be exact until June 29, 2023, old and young fans will have to wait until they see Harrison Ford as Dr. Henry Walton Jones Jr. in Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Fate on the big screen – one last time. Yes, as Disney itself has confirmed in a statement, the fifth Indy film will end the series. There will be no more movies, no spin-offs, no series in the same universe and most importantly no sequel to Harrison Ford. This iconic role belongs to him and only him. Even those responsible at Disney bow to this unwritten law. Hear hear!

To celebrate this cinematic event for all generations, Disney and Lucasfilm have unveiled a brand new trailer for the farewell performance of cinema’s most celebrated screen archaeologist at the Star Wars Celebration in London, in the presence of stars Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Mads Mikkelsen:

Of course, the trailer for “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull”, which many consider the worst part of the film series, also looked extremely tempting and promising in advance. But they were missing one crucial element: Indy’s favorite enemies in the form of the Nazis. What may seem corny to some is related to the Indiana Jones movies like Indy’s Hat and Whip to the Archaeologist and Indy to Harrison Ford. It almost seems that Indiana Jones is alienated in this new and supposedly peaceful world without Nazis occurs, unused, parked.

Then comes the adventure that his goddaughter Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) pulls him into at the end of the 1960s, just in time to give the newly retired retiree the feeling of following a destiny, his fate itself in his old age to have at hand. This could be an adventure that cinema audiences could come out of with mixed feelings.

A brand new poster inspired by previous Indy films has also been unveiled:

Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny: Time travel is the theme of the final adventure

What the just released trailer also confirms is the plot detail of the time travel. So far it has only been a more or less well-kept secret, but now it is clear what former Nazi Jürgen Voller (Mads Mikkelsen) and his henchman Klaber (Boyd Holbrook) are after: With the help of the eponymous artifact, they want to travel back in time and undo the mistakes of Adolf Hitler in order to bring Nazi Germany to final victory. A project that has unexpected consequences for the world. Indiana Jones’ goddaughter Helena (Phoebe Waller-Bridge) can’t let that happen. And she knows that to save the world as we know it, she needs the help of the most daring retiree of all: Indiana Jones (Harrison Ford).

The big question that arises here is how the time travel element is embedded in Indiana Jones and the Wheel of Destiny. Does the artifact cause you to physically travel back in time? Or do you just “awaken” in the younger body of yesteryear? If so, that could open up tremendous opportunities for some situational comedy, but also for nods to the previous films. In any case, the new trailer suggests that no small part of the film takes place in Indy’s past.

In addition to Harrison Ford, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Mads Mikkelsen and Boyd Holbrook, Toby Jones, John Rhys-Davies, Thomas Kretschmann, Olivier Richters and Shaunette Renée Wilson also star in director James Mangold’s indy finale.
