Wolverine very different in “Deadpool 3”: Marvel star hints at surprise for Hugh Jackman fans

Hugh Jackman won’t just reprise his old Marvel role for Deadpool 3, he’ll be playing an entirely new Wolverine, according to Ryan Reynolds.

Even if things are not going too well for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) at the moment and even fans are increasingly expressing their displeasure, there is still one or the other Marvel film that almost everyone is looking forward to: “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3” will start in German cinemas on May 3, 2023 and should finally unite fans and the general cinema community again. And then there’s Deadpool 3, which while most likely not appearing until MCU Phase 6, which the US theatrical release date of November 8, 2024 suggests, is at the top of the list of most anticipated Marvel films.

The anticipation of the fans is no coincidence: The first two “Deadpool” films enjoy a high reputation, on the rating site Rotten Tomatoes alone “Deadpool” has a rating of 85 percent from the critics and 90 percent from the fans, “Deadpool 2 “ can still be happy about 84 percent in the reviews and 85 percent in the fans. These include the two films among the few comic adaptations that are intended for an adult audience and were therefore produced without compromise.

At the latest when Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige promised that “Deadpool 3” would be allowed to keep its cheeky and brutal nature in the MCU and Hugh Jackman’s return as Wolverine was announced, there was no stopping him. Hey, when do you see the once-in-a-lifetime bromance between Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman on screen – and then in their respective dream roles as Wade Wilson aka Deadpool and Logan aka Wolverine? It has at least as much appeal as the class reunion of all three screen spideys Tom Holland, Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire in “Spider-Man: No Way Home”.

But as Ryan Reynolds has now revealed to Variety, it won’t be the Wolverine reunion Jackman has portrayed on screen. In fact, the new approach to the character is said to have been the bait to get the 54-year-old to once again train the Wolverine body over several tough months:

“We’ve wanted to do this for decades…it’s oddly perfect timing. I never stopped [convincing him to come back as Wolverine]. I’ve been besieging him like an annoying mosquito for the past few years. I believe in timing, as well as hard work and luck and all these intersections that should meet. Timing is the most important thing. I think he was ready. I think he was excited. And what we suggested to him is so different from the character he knows and has left behind that he gets to play something completely new and has something to look forward to.”

Sure, the Wolverine that fans know and love won’t exist anymore; Jackman had already given the all-clear that this timeline would not be doctored, so “Logan – The Wolverine” can remain the swan song of this iteration. So you can be all the more excited about what the audience can expect in “Deadpool 3”.

More (old) new additions to the “Deadpool 3” cast
There’s also great news from the cast front: As Deadline reports, two more familiar faces will be in “Deadpool 3”. On the one hand, Morena Baccarin slips back into the role of Wade Wilson’s favorite Vanessa, on the other hand there is a reunion with a real X-Men member in the form of Stefan Kapicic as Colossus’ US voice.

The cast continues to grow: in addition to Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Morena Baccarin and Stefan Kapicic, Matthew Macfadyen, Emma Corrin, Karan Soni and Leslie Uggams are also confirmed for the MCU debut of the mercenary with the big mouth.
