According to The Hollywood Reporter, Destin Daniel Cretton (“Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”) is in negotiations to direct “Spider-Man 4” starring Tom Holland.
“Spider-Man 4”: What Do We Know About the Movie?
Filming is reportedly set to begin early next year. The screenplay is being written by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who also worked on the scripts for the previous three installments. Kevin Feige from Marvel and former Sony head Amy Pascal will return as producers.
WARNING, SPOILERS!
The plot of the new “Spider-Man” remains a mystery for now. To recap, at the end of the last film, the main character decided to erase himself from everyone’s memory for the sake of the multiverse. Doctor Strange’s spell caused even Peter’s beloved MJ and his best friend Ned to forget about him.
The three Spider-Man films starring Holland have grossed nearly $4 billion at the box office in total. The biggest financial success was “Spider-Man: No Way Home” from 2021, which brought in close to $2 billion. Earlier this year, Holland mentioned in an interview that unless the writers and producers could come up with a good idea for the fourth part, there was no chance of it being made. “Our main priority is to protect the legacy,” the actor declared. “The third film was special in many ways, so we need to make sure everything is done right.”
Destin Daniel Cretton: Career
Destin Daniel Cretton debuted as a director with the film I Am Not a Hipster, which premiered at the Sundance Festival in 2012. His breakthrough came with his next project, the drama Short Term 12, starring Brie Larson, Lakeith Stanfield, and Rami Malek. The film won the Jury Award and the Audience Award at the SXSW Film Festival. Larson also appeared in two other Cretton films—The Glass Castle and Just Mercy. After directing Shang-Chi for Marvel, Cretton was also set to direct the next Avengers film but withdrew from the project late last year.
Cretton would replace Jon Watts, who directed the previous three Spider-Man films, behind the camera for “Spider-Man 4.”
