DC’s underdog Shazam is back! And apart from a few small weaknesses, Shazam 2 “Fury of the Gods” is also great cinema fun! You can find out what makes the film special and where it falls short in our review. Warning, some spoilers follow!
Admittedly, like some other comic book fans, I missed Shazam! when it was released in theaters, but DC’s superhero proved to be a godsend on stream. The mixture of buddy comedy, coming-of-age story and superhero action convinced me across the board. The anticipation for the sequel, which can now be seen in cinemas nationwide, was correspondingly great.
That’s what it’s all about: friendship, family ties and ancient gods
The waiting time of almost four years left a lot of room for speculation. And yet “Fury of the Gods” is now completely different than expected – at least in terms of content. Shazam (Zachary Levi/Asher Angel) and his siblings must contend with the daughters of Atlas, namely Hespera (Helen Mirren), Kalypso (Lucy Liu) and Anthea (Rachel Zegler). They want to unleash a destructive ancient power that could become more than dangerous to humans. Stopping the mighty goddesses will not be easy. Especially not considering that Billy seems to be the only one holding the family together, while Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer/Adam Brody), Mary (Grace Caroline Currey) and Co. prefer to pursue their own interests…
With heart, humor and plenty of star power into the big battle
The film unexpectedly begins with a dark drumbeat, but loosens up quickly as usual. The childish humor charged with pop culture, often conveyed by the adult superhero alter egos, has lost none of its charm and accuracy. Despite this youthful lightness, the characters have also developed further, after all some of them are nearing graduation and coming of age. The latter causes tension, especially in the foster family, which gives the audience a few very emotional moments.
In addition, action and fantasy fans will of course also get their money’s worth in “Fury of the Gods”. In addition to a real superhero exchange of blows and a gigantic dragon, the film also shows a love of detail. In addition, the Hollywood trio of Oscar winner Mirren, “Charlie’s Angels” star Liu and Rachel Zegler (“West Side Story”) bring a lot of momentum to the action. With such large-scale action sequences, Shazam! 2″ sometimes a bit long-winded.
Conclusion
If you liked the first part, you won’t be disappointed here either. And even if Shazam’s second solo adventure turns out to be a bit more serious and dark at times, that doesn’t detract from the enjoyment of the film. For both die-hard fans and DC newcomers alike, Shazam! Fury of the Gods” lighthearted popcorn cinema with a good dose of action, humor and a strong family bond.
Admittedly, the film didn’t really get off to a good start in its opening weekend and some DC fans may be wondering why they should still see the film given James Gunn’s extensive DC makeover. Even if Shazam should no longer play a role in the same comic film universe in the future, the sequel ensures good entertainment and a carefree time in the cinema. So if you can say goodbye to the idea of seeing a piece of the puzzle of the big picture here, you will also have a lot of fun with “Fury of the Gods”.
