Dwayne Johnson has big news for his many fans: he will be returning as lawman Luke Hobbs in a new Fast & Furious spin-off.

– Warning: a spoiler for “Fast & Furious 10” follows –

For years, Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson, both of whom are currently Hollywood’s biggest action stars, have publicly carried out a supposedly private feud that began on the set of Fast & Furious 8. The often quoted “creative differences” have long been out of the question. As a result, Johnson refused to ever appear in front of the camera again with Diesel for a (“nearly”) film. So much so that Johnson attempted to beat Diesel on his own ground with the Fast & Furious spin-off Hobbs & Shaw. The action film starring Jason Statham was a big box office hit, but it didn’t quite match the success of the main series.

All the more surprising then was the sudden about-face with a cameo appearance in an end credits scene on Fast & Furious 10, hinting that it won’t just be a brief reunion. And indeed, as Johnson himself has now revealed via Twitter, he will officially be returning as Luke Hobbs in another Fast & Furious movie:

As The Hollywood Reporter also notes, the said “Fast & Furious” film is not supposed to be a sequel to “Hobbs & Shaw”, but another independent action film. That could mean the new spin-off will focus entirely on Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs and his mission. The 51-year-old will not only take on the leading role, but will also be responsible for the project as a producer through his production company Seven Bucks Productions and together with his partners Hiram and Dany Garcia.

Chris Morgan, who wrote six Fast & Furious films and the Hobbs & Shaw spin-off, is writing the screenplay. Since this new action film is intended to bridge the gap between Fast & Furious 10 and Fast & Furious 11, fans can expect to see other stars of the series alongside Hobbs – except for one: Vin Diesel. The past and what happened in it probably wasn’t that far back after all. We chatted to some of the stars in the video.

New Fast & Furious spin-off starring Dwayne Johnson: Why the change of heart?
Where does Dwayne Johnson’s sudden change of heart come from after years of refusal and most recently turning down a peace offer from Vin Diesel? Well, if you want to be honest, he’s kept his word and hasn’t been in a picture with Diesel since Fast & Furious 8, so much for that.

On the other hand, its shine has lost its radiance. There was a time when Johnson’s name alone almost guaranteed a blockbuster hit. Most recently, his expensive films “Jungle Cruise” and “Black Adam” flopped at the box office, “Red Notice” may be considered a streaming success for Netflix, but it received scathing reviews. Johnson needs another rock-solid crowd pleaser, hit with audiences and box office success to avoid slipping into the second row. This is indicated by the plan to stage him in a spin-off without an equal co-star.

Whether he likes it or not, the giant celebrated his greatest successes as part of the “Fast & Furious” ensemble with “Fast & Furious 7” and “Fast & Furious 8”. The former wrestler needs Diesel’s “almost family” more than he likes to admit – the reverse is not true (anymore). And: With Johnson’s return as the popular character Luke Hobbs, Universal Pictures has one more reason to keep the action franchise alive for quite a while, despite the announced end.
