“Akte X” Reboot: Creator of the Original Names Biggest Challenge of the New Series

The iconic series “Akte X” is getting a reboot. In an interview, creator Chris Carter talked about what the new showrunner can expect.

The science fiction mystery series “Akte X” is one of the most important and significant series of the 1990s. Over eleven seasons and two movies, fans got to follow the eerie cases of the FBI, in which Special Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) investigated. After the ninth season aired in 2002, the series took a break for over ten years. Mulder and Scully returned in season 10 in 2016, but the big hype was missing.

In 2023, “Akte X” creator Chris Carter announced a reboot of the popular series. Ryan Coogler, who was responsible for the two “Black Panther” movies, will serve as the showrunner. In an interview with Inverse, Carter talked about the new and old challenges that an “Akte X” reboot will bring:

“It’s interesting. People ask, ‘Aren’t you very possessive about it?’ and I say, ‘No, I’m looking forward to seeing what someone else does with it. […] I just asked [Ryan Coogler] what his ideas were, he told me, and I said, ‘That sounds like some good ideas to me.’ In any case, he has a tough job ahead. Casting is a tough job. […] All the problems I had to deal with will be his problems.”

Popularity of conspiracy myths is a challenge Since the central plot of “Akte X” revolves around a major conspiracy about aliens within the US government, a reboot of the series could be more timely than ever. After all, conspiracy myths have become increasingly popular and mainstream since the series began. However, Carter also sees this as a challenge:

“Everything is a conspiracy. Nobody knows what the truth is. Everything is now completely subjective and relative.”

As Carter has already mentioned, casting the new main characters will be a major challenge for Coogler. After all, Mulder and Scully are among the most iconic duos in pop culture, and the chemistry between Duchovny and Anderson is unreachable for many fans. It remains to be seen whether an “Akte X” reboot will be successful without them and in today’s cultural and political climate.
