In 2021, we reported that J.J. Abrams would produce a DC film with Superman as the protagonist. Since then, however, much has changed (Warner canceled Abrams’ other projects), and there has been silence about the film. Now, the fate of the project has been revealed by James Gunn, who is currently preparing for the filming of “Superman Legacy” himself.
J.J. Abrams’ “Superman” is still in progress.
James Gunn revealed on Threads that the project did not end up in the trash and is still being developed. Abrams’ “Superman” will belong to the Elseworld universe, meaning it will be one of the films developed alongside the DC canon (like “Joker” and “Batman”).
We still don’t know any specifics except that the script is by Ta-Nehisi Coates – a journalist (TIME, Village Voice), correspondent for The Atlantic, social activist, and also a comic book writer (including the “Black Panther” series) and the author of the documentary “Between World and Me.”
Plot details remain a mystery. In 2021, there were speculations that the film’s protagonist would be a black Superman, likely known from DC comics as Calvin Ellis from Earth-23.
J.J. Abrams – what the “Star Wars” director has planned
A few years ago, J.J. Abrams signed a lucrative production deal with Warner Bros. However, we have not seen any results to date.
The last film directed by him remains the spectacle “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.”
As a producer, he is associated with a large number of projects. Among them are highly anticipated titles such as “Constantine 2,” the series “Duster,” or a film based on the automotive toys “Hot Wheels.”
