In the absence of major new releases, the number one spot remained with “Mufasa: The Lion King.” The Disney production had another successful weekend, grossing $27.9 million. This brought its overseas earnings to $350.9 million, making it the eighth highest-grossing Hollywood film of 2024. Globally, the film has accumulated $539.7 million.

Another family-friendly production, “Sonic the Hedgehog 3: Lightning Fast,” also held strong, maintaining its runner-up position with $20.3 million in earnings. Its international box office now stands at $180.3 million. The film still needs at least $35 million more to surpass the total earnings of the second Sonic installment. Globally, it is approaching the $400 million mark with a total of $384.8 million.
The third position in the ranking also remained unchanged, occupied by the horror film “Nosferatu.” This week, premieres in countries like India and Lebanon contributed to its $13.7 million weekend gross, bringing its international earnings to $54 million. This marks the best performance of director Robert Eggers’ career. Including domestic earnings, “Nosferatu” has accumulated $135.8 million globally.
The highest-ranked new release, the Indian action film “Game Changer,” debuted in fourth place, earning $12.3 million during its opening weekend. While this might seem impressive, most of the revenue came from the first day, as the film rapidly lost audiences over subsequent days. Its final tally is unlikely to be remarkable.
Meanwhile, the animated sequel “Moana 2” continues to achieve extraordinary results. Over the weekend, it placed fifth, earning $11.1 million. Globally, it is just $10 million shy of crossing the $1 billion mark in box office revenue. It will become the third Disney title from 2024 to achieve this milestone.
The next three spots in the rankings belong to Chinese films released at the end of last year.
- Sixth place: “Wu Sha 3” (Octopus with Broken Arms) earned $10.4 million, bringing its total to $93.5 million.
- Seventh place: “Xiao Xiao De Wo” (Big World) grossed $6.3 million, with total earnings of $89.9 million.
- Eighth place: The romantic comedy “Pian Pian Xi Huan Ni” (Honey Money Phony) took in $5.8 million, with a total of $39.7 million.
Closing out the top ten is “Wicked.” Although the musical is already available for home viewing, it continues to draw audiences to theaters, earning $5.6 million over the weekend. Its international earnings now stand at $238.7 million, with a global total nearing $700 million (currently at $697.6 million).
