Denis Villeneuve recently spoke with journalists from Vanity Fair magazine, where he touched on the subject of a potential third film. His words will intrigue fans but might also cause some concern.
“Dune Messiah” will be different… if it’s made
In the conversation, Villeneuve once again confirmed that he is working on the script for Dune Messiah. However, fans of the first two films shouldn’t rest easy just yet. In the interview, the director uses conditional language, saying, “if I make…,” clearly indicating that it’s not certain the film will be made at all.
Villeneuve also emphasized that Dune Messiah will not be the conclusion of a trilogy. He directly stated that Dune is not a trilogy: “It’s strange to say, but if I return to this world, it will be to do something entirely different, something that will have its own identity.”
The Canadian director also assured that the third film would be his last in the series. However, he doesn’t want his decision to mean the end of the saga. He plans to leave clues for another director to follow in the future:
“I think it would be a good idea to make sure that in Messiah there are seeds for someone who might want to return to this world later, because I think the following books are beautiful. Though more difficult to adapt. They are much more esoteric. But I don’t intend to close that door. I won’t do it myself, but it could happen with someone else.”
Dune Messiah tells the story of the final years of Muad’Dib’s reign and the consequences of the cruel decisions he made to secure humanity’s future.
Meanwhile, the Dune universe will continue in the form of a TV series. Dune: The Sisterhood, which will explore the origins of the Bene Gesserit, is currently in development.
