“Cocaine Bear,” Elizabeth Banks’ previous directorial project, premiered in Polish cinemas in March. Based on a true story from 1985 about a bear that goes on a rampage after ingesting drugs, the film earned $87 million worldwide.

The inspiration for “Cocaine Bear” comes from a true incident involving a drug dealer’s plane crash. Andrew Carter Thornton, a former paratrooper, police officer, and lawyer, turned to drug smuggling, transporting cocaine from Colombia to the US in his Cessna 404. On September 11, 1985, authorities discovered Thornton’s lifeless body in Knoxville, Tennessee. He was found armed, wearing a bulletproof vest, carrying thousands of dollars in cash, and with approximately 77 pounds of cocaine (valued at around $14 million) strapped to his waist in a bag. Thornton met his demise when his parachute failed to deploy after jumping from the Cessna, which was discovered and identified by authorities about 60 miles away.

Before his fateful jump, Thornton directed the plane toward the Atlantic Ocean and set it on autopilot. However, it was discovered that Thornton’s smuggling operation had another victim. In November 1985, a hunter stumbled upon a deceased bear in Chattahoochee National Forest. Near the bear, there was a bag that initially contained around 75 pounds (34 kg) of cocaine. It appeared that the unfortunate animal had opened the bag and overdosed. Authorities concluded that the bag was directly in the flight path of the Cessna.
