While appearing on the podcast Therapuss with Jake Shane, Powell described a situation that happened at a film-industry event. He met his idol — someone who made some of his favorite films. Although at first he was very excited to meet this person, his enthusiasm dropped when a photographer suggested they take a photo together.
“I was a fan of that person’s professional achievements, but not their personal choices,” Powell said.
“When someone wants to take a photo with you, you quickly realize that it’s not a good idea … I realized, looking at their face, that this is a toxic person. When they go out into the world, people instinctively react to them, taking into account a bad choice they made long ago.”

Powell is best known for playing Lieutenant Jake “Hangman” Seresin in Top Gun: Maverick. Other titles in his filmography include Hidden Strike, Anyone But You, and the series Scream Queens.
