“Superman” has been in theaters for two weeks now. While the film is performing very well in the U.S., its reception worldwide hasn’t been as positive. The director of the film (and one of the heads of DC Studios) was recently asked about this. Here’s what he had to say.
James Gunn on “Superman” Box Office Results
In the U.S., “Superman” had an excellent second weekend, earning $58.5 million. Among all DC films, only two had better second weekend results: Batman and Wonder Woman. In total, the U.S. market has contributed $236.2 million.
However, the rest of the world tells a different story. In some regions (such as the Far East), Superman is doing very poorly. As a result, the film has so far earned only $173.1 million outside of the U.S.
James Gunn commented on this in an interview with Rolling Stone:
“In some places, he’s not as well-known a superhero as, say, Batman. That matters. Also, the fact that there are anti-American sentiments around the world plays a role. That doesn’t help us at all.”
Is that a fair assessment? Let us know in the comments.
