Mel Gibson to Return as Mad Max? The Star Responds

Mel Gibson’s portrayal of Max Rockatansky in the “Mad Max” series opened doors to an international career for him. Although the actor last played the titular daredevil almost 40 years ago, journalists regularly ask him in interviews about a possible return to the role. This topic also came up in a conversation with “The New Indian Express” newspaper.

Mel Gibson in the “Mad Max” Series

Gibson admitted that he had discussions with the series creator, George Miller, about appearing in another installment at one point. He stated, “I was going to get into that at one point, but I’m a bit too old for that now,” the star said.

The “Mad Max” series is set in a post-nuclear war world where brutal motorcycle gang members rule Australia and attack anyone in their path. The titular hero, Max Rockatansky, is a no-nonsense cop who takes it upon himself to bring them to justice.

The first “Mad Max” film hit theaters in 1979. Made for just $650,000, the film earned $100 million worldwide. Gibson returned as Rockatansky in “Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior” (1981) and “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” (1985).

“Mad Max” Continues On

In 2015, “Mad Max: Fury Road” was released, with Tom Hardy taking on the titular role, alongside Charlize Theron as Furiosa. The film won six Oscars and was immediately hailed as an action cinema masterpiece.

Scheduled for next year is the release of “Furiosa,” a prequel to “Fury Road.” As the title suggests, it will focus on a young Furiosa, played by Anya Taylor-Joy. Chris Hemsworth will also appear as a villain.

In a post-apocalyptic world, a young Furiosa is kidnapped from the Green Place run by Many Mothers and falls into the hands of a motorcycle gang led by the warlord Dementus. As they traverse the wastelands, the gang encounters the Citadel ruled by Immortan Joe. While the two tyrants vie for dominance, Furiosa must survive deadly trials and find a way back home.

George Miller revealed that the events in “Furiosa” will unfold over a decade and a half. “I didn’t set out to make a big, long chase movie,” the director said. “But the scope of this story… we needed a different narrative structure.”
