Uruguay holds the distinction of being the only country in Oscars history whose nominee was both nominated and subsequently disqualified. This relates to the film “A Piece of the World of Your Own.” The Academy disqualified it, citing minimal participation of Uruguayan artists in its production. (“A Piece of the World of Your Own” is primarily an Argentinian production, but Uruguay chose “El lado oscuro del corazón” as its Oscar contender.)
