“Shrek 5” Later in Theaters, New “Minions” a Year Earlier! Universal Adjusts Its 2026 Release Calendar

“Shrek 5” Becomes a Holiday Film

Universal has decided to delay the release of the animated movie “Shrek 5” by a few months. Initially slated for early July 2026, the U.S. release date is now set for December 23, 2026.

Details about the film remain scarce. However, it has been confirmed that the original cast—Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, reprising their roles as Shrek, Donkey, and Princess Fiona—will return. The movie will be directed by Walt Dohrn, Conrad Vernon, and Brad Ableson.

In 2026, DreamWorks Animation will celebrate the 25th anniversary of the original “Shrek” film.

New “Minions” Adventures Coming Much Sooner

The slot vacated by “Shrek 5” will now be taken by another Universal animation, “Minions 3.”

This means the movie’s release has been significantly accelerated. Initially planned for June 30, 2027, the new date is expected sometime in 2026.

Details about the plot remain under wraps, but it’s been announced that Pierre Coffin, a veteran of the franchise who directed four previous Minions films and voices the Minions, will helm the project.
