As the end of the year approaches, the period begins when creators will tempt us with what they have in store for the coming years. And so, in the magazine ‘Empire,’ the first official photo from the movie ‘Nosferatu‘ has appeared.
Robert Eggers refreshes the classic
The first photo depicts Lily-Rose Depp as Ellen Hutter, who gazes in terror at Count Orlok. We don’t see Orlok himself in the photo, except for the shadow cast by his hand.
In the accompanying text of the photo, we can read the director’s admiration for Bill Skarsgård’s transformation into Count Orlok. The director claims that the actor completely disappeared, becoming the embodiment of the vampire from folk tales. According to him, Skarsgård looks as if he were truly a dead Transylvanian nobleman.
Eggers also announces that his ‘Nosferatu’ will be a truly terrifying gothic horror. In his opinion, there hasn’t been a gothic horror story in cinema for a long time that would truly be full of terror. His film is set to change that.
The new ‘Nosferatu’ will not be a copy of F.W. Murnau’s original, of which Eggers is a big fan. His work will change the accents. It will focus more on the character of Ellen Hutter, whom – if we believe the director – Depp played perfectly.
A long road to the making of ‘Nosferatu’
And yet, Depp was not supposed to be the star of the movie. When Eggers first announced the horror in 2015, he envisioned Anya Taylor-Joy in the lead role, with whom he had already had the opportunity to work. Unfortunately, when Eggers could start filming, the actress was unavailable. And when Taylor-Joy had a free schedule, the project happened to fall apart (such as when Harry Styles, who was originally supposed to play Ellen’s husband, dropped out of the cast).
Ultimately, Nicholas Hoult took on Styles’s role. The cast also includes Willem Dafoe, Emma Corrin, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
