Do you still remember “The Crow”? The recent, fan-enraging remake of the cult film with Brandon Lee? According to the World of Reel website, after just two weeks in theaters, Rupert Sanders’ project is heading to VOD platforms. According to reporters, in the U.S., this will happen as soon as next week, on September 13th.
“The Crow” is coming to VOD
This is a direct consequence of the financial disaster that the new “The Crow” turned out to be. So far, the film has made $9 million on the domestic market (USA); just over $7 million in its opening weekend and $1.8 million in the second. This represents a drastic drop in revenue and a really poor opening; additionally, considering the production budget, which was around $50 million, Lionsgate studio is in serious trouble.
Let’s recall that in the new “The Crow,” Shelley and Eric, deeply in love, try to start a new life away from the criminal world that shaped them. However, the past won’t let them escape. When both fall victim to a brutal murder, Eric, on the verge of the afterlife, receives an offer he can’t refuse. To save his beloved’s soul from hell, he must return to earth to punish those responsible for her death. Thus begins his bloody odyssey through the world of the living and the dead.
Critics and audiences attacked the film even before its release, which neither the promotional campaign nor the final quality of the movie could overcome—the average audience score for “The Crow” is 5.4/10, with critics giving it a 3.4/10, making it one of the worst-rated big-budget films of the year.
Unfortunately, this isn’t the only problem for the American studio and distributor. Their recent “Borderlands” also turned out to be a huge flop (currently about $20-30 million in losses for Lionsgate), and Lionsgate’s next distribution mission is Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis”—a controversial film, difficult to promote, and unlikely to bring significant earnings, regardless of the star-studded cast involved in the project.
Unfortunately, it is not yet known whether Polish audiences will also be able to watch “The Crow” at home on VOD next week, alongside its U.S. release on September 13th.
