If Florence Pugh fans feel dissatisfied with how small her role is in the spectacle “Dune: Part Two”, Denis Villeneuve has good news for them. The character of Princess Irulan will play a much larger role in the third installment of the series. Of course, if the film comes to fruition.

Denis Villeneuve on Florence Pugh’s Role in “Dune: Part Two”

“When I invited Zendaya for the first part, I told her, ‘Now I’m introducing your character, and if the second film is made, you’ll be one of the main characters then.’ And she agreed,” Denis Villeneuve revealed in an interview with “Entertainment Weekly.” “I made the same agreement with Florence. Her character is introduced in the second part, but if an adaptation of ‘Dune Messiah’ is made, of course, Princess Irulan will be one of the main characters in that story.”

This is another confirmation from the director that he is interested in making a third film in the series. Villeneuve also mentioned what led him to cast Pugh as Irulan: “Florence has that inner strength I was looking for. I didn’t want Irulan to be a victim or a pawn. I wanted her to have her own ambitions and take control of her destiny. She managed to capture the tension that her character experiences in silence.”

Florence Pugh herself admitted that Irulan is a different character from her roles in “Midsommar” or “Little Women”: “The characters I’ve chosen in the past were usually very talkative, loud, and stubborn. But I liked in the script of ‘Dune: Part Two’ that Irulan constantly listens and is attentive. We’re not entirely sure what she’s seeking, and it’s only towards the end that we realize she’s been in control from the start.”
