Fans of supernatural entertainment and martial arts battles can soon look forward to another live-action adaptation of a 90s manga and anime hit on Netflix. Following the great success of ‘One Piece’ on Netflix, there is hope that the curse of live-action adaptations of popular anime titles may finally be broken. Although the US voice actor of Son Goku is skeptical about potential future endeavors, it is only a matter of time before someone dares to tackle ‘Dragon Ball’ and similar popular titles again.
Netflix has yet another live-action version of a popular 90s manga and anime on its schedule for later this year. As revealed by the streaming service in a post on X (formerly Twitter), the adaptation of Toshihiro Togashi’s ‘Yu Yu Hakusho’ is set to arrive on Netflix on December 14, 2023:
A very brief first impression of the live-action series was obtained thanks to the trailer for Geeked Week 2023.
During Netflix’s Geeked Week from November 6 to 12, 2023, we can expect a proper trailer. Many fans are likely looking forward to this, as it promises the adaptation of one of the best-selling manga from the cult magazine ‘Weekly Shonen Jump.’ A total of 78 million copies of ‘Yu Yu Hakusho’ were reportedly sold by 2022 (via magmix).
The anime also received a great response, with an IMDb rating of 8.5. You can stream all 112 episodes of the anime on Netflix, for example, via Sky Q, where you can consolidate multiple streaming providers at one address. Why it worked with ‘One Piece’ and what Netflix can learn from it.
Demon Action: What ‘Yu Yu Hakusho’ is About Fourteen-year-old Yusuke Urameshi is actually a troublemaker who regularly engages in street fights. Therefore, it comes as a surprise when he loses his life in a car accident while pushing a child out of the way, sacrificing himself. This selfless act even astonishes the underworld, where Yusuke finds himself after his death. There, they are not entirely sure whether he should be sent to heaven or hell. As a result, Yusuke is given the chance to prove himself in various trials, and he actually manages to regain his life on Earth. In addition, he is bestowed with the title of “Spirit Detective” and in this role, he is tasked with locating and defeating demons on Earth.
‘Yu Yu Hakusho’ is, therefore, a mix of a supernatural story filled with demons and some unique martial arts battles. We can be excited to see if Netflix can appropriately adapt another popular manga and anime after ‘One Piece.’ If successful, we can expect a true action highlight later this year.”
