In an interview, producer Jon Landau revealed what awaits us in “Avatar 3,” “Avatar 4,” and “Avatar 5.
Following the groundbreaking success of “Avatar: The Way of Water,” fans can rejoice that the future of the franchise is secure. The next few films will be told from the perspective of other characters, offering a new view of Pandora. Producer Jon Landau has now revealed what innovations await us.
Jon Landau spoke about the planned changes in an interview with Empire Magazine (via Deadline). “Avatar 4” will feature “a major time jump,” and as hinted at in previous interviews, part of “Avatar 5” will take place on Earth, which is depicted as suffering from “overpopulation and the depletion of natural resources, making life difficult.”
Nevertheless, Landau makes it clear that the “Avatar” makers do not aim to “paint a bleak picture of where our world is headed.” The movies are also about “the idea that we can change direction.” The time jump in “Avatar 4” was hinted at by director James Cameron back in 2021, when he explained that some scenes featuring various child actors had to be filmed before they aged too much.
Landau also revealed more about the Ash People, the Fire Na’vi, who will appear in “Avatar 3.” Leading the nefarious Na’vi will be Varang, played by Oona Chaplin, whose casting was announced back in 2017. Until now, we were not sure exactly how her character fits into the story. Chaplin is the granddaughter of legendary comedian Charlie Chaplin and is best known for her role as Talisa Stark on “Game of Thrones.” The producer says of the Ash People:
“There are good people and bad people. It’s the same with the Na’vi. People often don’t see themselves as evil. What causes them to evolve into what we consider evil? Maybe there are other factors that we don’t know about.”
