With “The Marvels” being the next big Marvel film for the cinema, fans are full of hope that it will introduce the beloved X-Men into the MCU.
Perhaps the somewhat disappointing cameo appearances of Patrick Stewart as Professor Charles Xavier, also known as Professor X, and John Krasinski as Reed Richards, alias Mister Fantastic, in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” are one of the reasons why Marvel fans are now more than ever demanding a proper and respectful introduction of the Fantastic Four and the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). “Fantastic Four” will make their MCU debut in 2025 with Reed Richards, Sue, Johnny Storm, and The Thing, but there is still no official news about the X-Men. “Deadpool 3” (likely to be released in Germany in 2025) may offer some consolation, as it will feature some X-Men characters like Wolverine (Hugh Jackman).
Marvel fans are expecting a big showdown and confrontation between the various Marvel groups, especially with “Avengers: Secret Wars.” But the X-Men could appear much sooner than May 5, 2027, when “Avengers: Secret Wars” is scheduled to premiere in German cinemas. Apart from Ms. Marvel being revealed as a mutant, it could actually happen in just a few days – in “The Marvels.”
“The Marvels” is not only a sequel to “Captain Marvel” but also a continuation of the “Ms. Marvel” series and the personal story of Monica Rambeau, known from the series “WandaVision,” as well as the events from the series “Secret Invasion,” all of which you can stream on Disney+. Andi has summarized what you need to know from these works in advance to fully enjoy “The Marvels.”
A major plot element, in addition to the gimmick that the three superheroines swap places when they use their powers, is the fact that “another reality is merging with ours,” as Monica Rambeau emphasizes in the final trailer. This hint becomes even clearer in a teaser trailer where the phrase “Be There For What Comes Next” is embedded as a title card. It dissolves afterward, with the X fading visibly slower, followed by Samuel L. Jackson saying, “They’re here.” Are the X-Men being referred to here?
On Reddit, fans speculate whether the person walking past Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) could possibly be Ororo Munroe, also known as Storm. It’s also possible that it could be her (alternative) mother, Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), or an entirely different person. But the biggest clue to the X-Men could be the symbol on the screen on the left in the same scene, resembling the X-Men logo. That can’t possibly be a coincidence, can it? But see for yourself.
The X-Men in “The Marvels”? Director remains tight-lipped If anyone – in addition to all the other parties and those who have already seen the film – can say something about this rumor, it would most likely be director Nia DaCosta (“Candyman”). Due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA labor dispute, all actors are forbidden to comment on their work in any way.
In an interview with the YouTube channel “Jake’s Takes,” DaCosta was asked about this potential Easter egg, to which she responded with a sly smile, “Oh, how audacious, how audacious.”
So, what’s the real story will become evident on November 8, 2023 when “The Marvels” premieres in Germany, marking the conclusion of the MCU on the big screen for the cinema year.
As Marvel fans, you probably love the cameo appearances of Marvel legend Stan Lee as much as we do. Can you recognize the corresponding movies based on these cameos? Test yourselves:
