He graduated from the University of Kent in Canterbury, where he studied English and American literature. During his studies, he became interested in theater, leading him to audition for the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, which he completed in 1973.

Wilkinson made his on-screen debut in 1976, initially appearing in British series such as “Spyship,” “First Among Equals,” and “Martin Chuzzlewit.” He sporadically appeared in films (including “In the Name of the Father,” “Sense and Sensibility,” and “The Ghost and the Darkness”). His breakthrough came with the comedy “The Full Monty” (1997), earning him a BAFTA award.
