Sometimes films land in the Netflix charts that no one has heard of beforehand. This seems to be the case with the current No. 1 on Netflix.
With films like Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga and The Fall Guy, audiences have already been treated to high-octane action in theaters this year. But streaming platforms have also delivered some notable action films for genre fans. One of these is Rebel Ridge, which currently tops Netflix’s film charts.
In Rebel Ridge, the story follows former Marine Terry Richmond (Aaron Pierre), who travels to the town of Shelby Springs to post bail for his cousin Mike (C.J. LeBlanc) and buy a truck together, so they can start an honest life. However, upon arrival, Terry is harassed by two police officers, who illegally confiscate his $36,000 savings. He confronts Police Chief Sandy Burnne (Don Johnson), only to realize he’s caught in a web of corruption that won’t be easy to escape.
Rebel Ridge is directed by Jeremy Saulnier (Green Room), who also wrote the script for the 131-minute action thriller. The film was released on Netflix on September 6, 2024.
Reactions to Rebel Ridge There are currently 58 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes, and the film has garnered a 95% approval rating from critics. The audience score is a solid 74%. Here’s what critics had to say:
Adam Kempenaar from Filmspotting writes:
“Saulnier once again delivers a simmering powder keg.”
Jonathan Wilson from Ready Steady Cut says:
“Action films have been copying Rambo since its debut in 1982, but Jeremy Saulnier’s Rebel Ridge is a rare homage that not only imitates the format but does so well and updates it intelligently.”
Elliot Collins from Movie Files states:
“Director Jeremy Saulnier creates his own version of a Western that meets Reacher/ Rambo. The first act of Rebel Ridge is incredibly gripping and builds tension perfectly. Aaron Pierre continues to prove he’s one of the best and smartest actors around.”
Adam Graham from Detroit News comments:
“A tight, well-made action thriller that plays to its strengths and feels like a genre piece from the 1970s.”
