One episode per week or the entire season at once? The Creator of “Scott Pilgrim” on Netflix Has His Pick

Streaming platforms, with their model of releasing new seasons of shows, have effectively accustomed viewers to binge-watching new content. This viewing model still has its staunch opponents. One of them is the co-creator of the animated series “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” BenDavid Grabinski (“Are You Afraid of the Dark?”, “Skiptrace”), who openly criticized the distribution model imposed by Netflix on his project.

The creator of “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” on releasing series all at once

Grabinski, the writer and producer of “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” voiced his opinion on the social media platform X. He unequivocally spoke out against the distribution model favored by Netflix. He wrote:

As someone whose series was made available all at once, I’ll say… it’s the dumbest thing in the world. Literally, there are no upsides to it. Imagine if the entire season of “X-Men ’97” was already available!!!

In response to Grabinski’s message, many fans who enjoy watching one episode after another chimed in. The writer pointed out that with a weekly release, viewers could simply wait until the full season is available and binge-watch it.

The creator also shared his idea for distributing the animated “Scott Pilgrim.” He admitted that for his eight-episode series, he wanted to release it over four weeks, putting out two episodes each time.

The series is another adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s graphic novels, following the well-known film by Edgar Wright “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World,” the animated “Scott Pilgrim vs. the Animation,” and video games. The titular character meets the girl of his dreams, Ramona Flowers, but to date her, he must defeat her seven evil exes. Things get even more complicated later on.

In the animated version of “Scott Pilgrim,” actors from the film reprise their roles. These include not only Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Scott and Ramona but also Satya Bhabha, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Brie Larson, Alison Pill, Aubrey Plaza, Brandon Routh, Jason Schwartzman, Johnny Simmons, Mark Webber, Mae Whitman, and Ellen Wong. The series was produced by Wright.
