The wasteland adventure in “Fallout” officially continues: Amazon orders new episodes of the sci-fi hit

Cheers to a cold Nuka-Cola! Amazon has ordered new episodes of the sci-fi series “Fallout” following its resounding success. So, the journey through the wasteland continues.

The countries where Amazon’s video game adaptation “Fallout” ranks number 1 have recently increased again: from 104 back to 108 (via Flixpatrol). Since the charmingly brutal sci-fi series was released just under a week ago, it has been topping the charts in this country for days, even across all streaming services (via JustWatch). Amazon Studios has just announced its actual success through a press release (via Variety). According to this, it is said to be among the top three most-watched titles of all time on Amazon Prime Video and is also the most-watched season of a series since “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.”

Let’s remember: Amazon celebrated a phenomenal success with “Reacher” Season 2 at the turn of the year, which was already said to be the biggest season start since that very fantasy series based on the works of author J.R.R. Tolkien. The opening episodes of the current season, which were made available in mid-December 2023, reportedly already made “Reacher” the most successful Amazon title of 2023. And now it’s reported that “Fallout” is said to be more successful than anything since “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power.” Unfortunately, the company does not provide any numbers. One might have to wait for the data from the TV analysis company Nielsen to get concrete numbers.

Nevertheless, the success of this magnitude must have surprised even the most optimistic, including the responsible parties such as producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, as well as showrunners Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Graham Wagner. Not even a week has passed, and Amazon has already renewed “Fallout” for a second season. Jennifer Salke, head of Amazon MGM Studios, is already looking forward to further immersing the audience in the world of “Fallout”:

“Jonathan [Nolan], Lisa [Joy], Geneva [Robertson-Dworet], and Graham [Wagner] have captivated the world with this groundbreaking and wild ride of a series. The bar was set high for fans of this iconic video game series – and so far, it seems we’ve exceeded their expectations, while also gaining millions of new fans for the franchise. The cast, especially Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Walton Goggins, and Kyle MacLachlan, have done everything right! We want to thank Jonathan and Lisa, as well as our friends at Bethesda, for bringing the series to us, and Geneva and Graham, who came on board as showrunners. We’re excited to announce the second season after just one week and to take the audience deeper into the surreal world of ‘Fallout.'”

“Fallout”: Creator of the video game looks forward to further collaboration

“Fallout” undoubtedly belongs to a new generation of video game adaptations. Here, the filmmakers pay the necessary respect to the source material, are often fans themselves, and are also willing to collaborate with the respective studios to excite both fans and new audiences. This worked with “The Last of Us,” where creator Neil Druckmann even serves as showrunner, and it also works with “Fallout.” Here, they worked closely with Bethesda Softworks and game designer Todd Howard, who was an active producer. Howard was responsible for the two most popular “Fallout” games after the original: “Fallout 3” and “Fallout 4.” The 51-year-old is already looking forward to further cooperation:

“It was one of the most spectacular projects we’ve ever been involved in. Jonathan [Nolan] and his team did an incredible job, and we’re not only thrilled about the reactions to the series, but also about being able to collaborate more with these wonderful people.”

Graham Wagner recently emphasized that Season 2 is already in the works and it only needs the green light from Amazon to start right away. So maybe the next episodes will be here sooner than expected?
